SCOPE has also launched the Musiri
ECOSAN Pilot Project under which two Community ECOSAN Toilets
and 500 Household Centered Environmental Sanitation Toilet (HCEST)
would be constructed with assistance from WASTE of Netherlands.
The ECOSAN Community Compost
Toilet, the first of its kind in the country has been constructed
in Saliyar Street on the banks of the River Cauvery in Musiri,
Tamil Nadu, It was thrown open for public use on April 11th 2006.
It has two blocks, one for men
and the other for women with seven cubicles in each block. The
urine from the toilets is collected separately in a tank and taken
to nearby farms for cultivation of paddy, banana and sugarcane,
after appropriate dilution. The wash water is collected in a filter
bed and then supplied to the nearby farm for the cultivation of
banana.
The second ECCT in Parisalthurai street was Opened on 31/12/2006.
The ECCT has some new features like Child Friendly Ecosan toilet,
Sanitary Napkin incinerator, Glass slit in the Detachable slab
to view the process of Dehydration and composting and concealed
Pipes for transport of urine and washwater.
