| The
grave water crisis, both qualitatively and quantitatively the country
is facing today is a direct consequence of a Sanitary Crisis. Most
conventional sanitary systems (Pit latrine & Flush Toilets)
when considered with regards to their hygienic safety, resource
efficiency, socio economic sustainability and environmental impact
are not environmentally sustainable.
Existing conventional forms of wastewater management and sanitation
systems fall under the categories of either waterborne or dry systems.
The design of these two were flush and forget or drop and store
technologies based on the premise that excreta is a waste fit only
for disposal. It was also assumed that this waste could be easily
assimilated by the environment. The conventional wastewater systems
are mostly linear end-of-pipe systems where precious water is misused
to transport waste into the water cycle thereby causing environmental
degradation and health hazards, besides and leading to water deficit
situation.
These are the state-of-the-art wastewater solutions. If we continue
to promote these technologies the quality of the water sources both
surface and underground will deteriorate further with disastrous
consequences.
