Promoting water supply and sanitation facilities for one town and two rural panchayats.

The objective of the programme is to provide water tap connections to 1,800 houses and household toilets to 200 houses covering 9,000 people in 3 Panchayat (Musiri Town Panchayat and Vellur, Sevnthilingapuram Village Panchayat) by November 2010 in order to bring down the waterborne diseases by 80% and preventing 90% of the open defecation. Also, to conduct Sanitation, health and hygiene education for 10000 people living in the 3 Panchayats.

The water.org provides Rs.1, 000/- as water deposit amount and Rs.2, 500/- to buy pipeline materials, labour charge and stand post and the remaining amount of Rs.4500/- (in Town Panchayat Only) is borne by the beneficiary. The water point’s work was well received by the people; both in Town panchayat and village panchayats. Till August 2009, 517 water points
were completed.

The Ecosan toilets constructing work is going on following the awareness programme conducted. Cement bags, Hollow blocks and slaps, PVC materials were supplied to them. The total cost of the construction of toilet is Rs.8, 770/-, out of which the water.org provides Rs.3000/- as subsidy, the WASTE VENTURE provides loan of Rs.3000/- and the remaining amount is borne by the beneficiary. Till August 2009, 58 toilets were completed in the 3 panchayats.

Awareness programme, Participatory Rural Approach (PRA), Campaign, formation of Watsan committee/ Youth Clubs, raining to elected representatives, exposure visits were conducted to make the people more aware of the water and sanitation programme and involve them in identifying/ selecting eneficiaries and Implementing the programme.

Follow-up prgrammes like water/ toilet users meetings are being held, at regular intervals, and the people share their views, the benefits received from the water and sanitation programme. They are thankful to ater.org and SCOPE for the help. Staff review meetings are held, every fortnight, and work is assed and action plan prepared.
